One mighty mineral. Endless possibilities.

Growing Medium

The unique structure of expanded Silbrico Perlite is perfect for horticultural use. Tiny porous cavities provide holding capacity for water and nutrients and allow for aeration and drainage of the root system. These qualities have long established horticultural perlite as the top performing growing medium. At Silbrico, we develop various grades of perlite for optimum growth in different applications.

Horticultural perlite’s ability to maintain uniform moisture and temperature levels while providing adequate drainage makes it the ideal medium for seedling growth. Its capacity to cling to roots and root hairs reduces transplant shock and increases survival rates. It also offers protection to seedlings by resisting surface moss and algae growth.

Horticultural perlite is the natural choice for soil conditioning because it offers so many benefits:

  • Aerates and drains soil, preventing over-watering
  • Holds moisture and nutrients
  • Has strong capillary action
  • Breaks up compacted soil
  • Lightens heavy soil
  • Inorganic and won’t rot or dissolve
  • Promotes root growth
  • Costs less than alternatives

Our specialty product for soil mix is the coarse grade of Sil-Ponix. Learn more about its different uses below.

Perlite’s strong capillary attraction for water makes it an outstanding substrate for hydroponic culture. Research has shown that growing plants hydroponically with perlite produces a heavier, better quality crop. Cannabis plants, in particular, respond very positively to perlite because it allows for more oxygen, better drainage and retention of essential nutrients.
